Abstract:

On these pages, we will describe a program which work with a digital multimeter connected to a computer.

We will use it to measure the temperature of the primary mirror of our telescope, meanwhile, it can be used to measure almost anything (volt/amp/hom/Hz,etc.).

The measures can be stored for later use, or simply loaded back on the virtual meter to observe trends, or measures changes as well as variations of any kind.

Scope of this project:

- To be able to log temperatures measured, for later display.

- To be able to take action if the temperature rise above a critical preset mark.

- Implementation of a data logging process, for reading data from a digital multimeter and diplaying the captured data on a graph, using a home made program.

- Storage of data, with capability to reload them at a later time.

- The whole process should be convenient enough to be usable by non-professionals.

If you qualified yourselve as somebody like a "Programer gurus, geek, nerds, etc.".
Please send us your feedback if you add features to this program.
We would apreciate if you send us a picture or a link with picture(s) to what you did with it.

Reading from a homemade seismometer.
Interval is 1.5 second between each reading.
They are more than 10000 reading on the screen

Computer is a laptop P-III 500 MHz 128 MB RAM.
Meter is a Metex Me-11.

Project history:

We started by modifying a command line application, that we choosed to make more convenient for our use.
The original command line program has been writen by Martin Hammerschmid and can be found at the following address:
home.pages.at/linux.

Eugene mentioned the idea to Jerry and Christian, who both agreed to help on this project.
Christian and Eugene started using the script language "tcl/tk", later Jerry converted the core program to Python, while Eugene worked on the user interface.
Two teenagers got involved on the project as well. It was an introduction, to answer question such as "how does it work ?".
